Grotrian Steinweg model 185 Ampico reproducing piano, circa 1926. This piano has a very interesting history, having been the property of the late Norman Evans, and during his ownership it featured in the book ‘Pianola: The History of the Mechanical Piano and how to repair it’ by Arthur W J G Ord Hume (Allen & Unwin, 1970, recommended). Norman Evans was an acknowledged expert on the Ampico system (he notably adapted a brand-new Estonia concert grand piano to make a 9′ Ampico, which attracted much attention around the world and was recorded by Decca), and this piano formed part of his collection and was restored by him. At his wife’s insistence, the casework was re-finished in a much paler colour. It was eventually sold to the Corin collection in Cornwall, where it was on public display, before I acquired it about five years ago. It has been in storage since then. It was in playing order before being stored. It is available in ex-storage condition for £5,000, or it can be fully re-furbished and re-polished to suit the buyer’s requirements. 50 Ampico rolls included. Please phone for more details.
